Why techs stay

  • Year-round, full-time work
  • Take-home trucks
  • Paid training & licensing
  • Health, dental & vision
  • 401(k) with match
  • No commission pressure

We pay hourly with overtime, not on commission, because we don't want anyone in a customer's basement worrying about what to sell. Technicians get a stocked take-home truck, company tablets, uniforms and boots, and an on-call rotation that works out to about one week in six. We cover the cost of license exams, continuing education and certifications. And we close the shop for a family cookout every August, where Stan grills and Gus begs.

The K&D Apprenticeship Program

Stan learned plumbing by apprenticing under a master for years before he ever ran a job alone, and we still think that's the best way to learn. In 2019 we started our own paid apprenticeship program, and we've graduated nine apprentices since. Seven of them still work here.

Apprentices earn while they learn. You start at $18 an hour with raises every six months as you hit your milestones, and we pay 100% of tuition for classroom hours, books and license exam fees. You'll spend your days in the field with a lead tech and your evenings (two a week, during the school year) in class.

How it works

  1. Year 1: Ride along with a lead tech. Learn tools, safety, materials and how to talk to customers. Start on basic repairs under supervision.
  2. Year 2: Water heaters, fixtures, drain cleaning (plumbing track) or tune-ups and basic diagnostics (HVAC track). Earn EPA 608 if you're on the HVAC side.
  3. Year 3: Run simpler calls on your own with a lead tech a phone call away. Bigger installs as part of a crew.
  4. Year 4: Prepare for your journeyman exam or HVAC certifications. Most apprentices are running their own truck by the end of the year.

No experience is required, just a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, and the willingness to get dirty and keep learning. Career center grads are especially welcome. Ask Riley Sanderson, currently in year three, what it's like.

What happens after you apply

  1. Marisol or Agnes calls you within a week, usually sooner.
  2. You come by the shop for a conversation (and to meet Gus).
  3. For technician jobs, a short ride-along or hands-on skills check, paid.
  4. Background check and drug screen, the same as every K&D tech.
  5. Two weeks of in-house training before you run your first call.
