Furnace repair and replacement, without the pressure

Most furnace problems are repairs, not replacements. We'll tell you which one you have, give you the price in writing, and get the heat back on.

Signs your furnace needs attention

  • No heat, or not enough. The blower runs but the air is cool, or some rooms never warm up.
  • Short cycling. It starts, runs a minute or two, shuts off and starts again.
  • New noises. Squealing, banging when it lights, rattling or a loud hum. (Our blog post on furnace noises decodes the common ones.)
  • A yellow or flickering burner flame instead of a steady blue one.
  • Higher gas bills with no change in the weather or your thermostat.
  • Your carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Get everyone outside first. See the safety box below.
  • It's 15 to 20 years old and needing repairs every season.

What we do on the visit

  1. Listen. When did it start, what does it sound like, what does the thermostat say? Many furnaces flash an error code; we read it.
  2. Safety check first. We test for gas leaks and carbon monoxide and inspect the heat exchanger and venting before anything else.
  3. Diagnose. Igniter, flame sensor, pressure switch, inducer motor, blower, control board, thermostat. We find the actual failed part.
  4. Quote it. You get a written price. The $89 service call is applied to the repair. If the furnace is old enough that replacement deserves a look, we give you both numbers.
  5. Repair and test. We carry the common parts on our trucks, so most repairs are done on the first visit.

Replacement prices depend on the size of your home, the efficiency you choose, whether you want a variable-speed or two-stage model, and any venting or ductwork changes. We install all major furnace brands and size every system with a proper load calculation, not by matching the old one. New systems carry the K&D Promise: 10 years parts, 2 years labor. Financing is available, as low as $79/month with approved credit and 0% for 18 months on systems over $5,000.

Why a fall tune-up is worth $129

The first cold night in Ohio usually arrives in October and catches a lot of furnaces that haven't run since March. A tune-up cleans the burners and flame sensor, checks the igniter and the heat exchanger, tests safety switches, measures gas pressure and temperature rise, and replaces a standard filter. We find small problems while they're cheap. Comfort Club members get it, and the spring AC tune-up, for $199 a year.

How long it takes

A tune-up takes about an hour. Most repairs take one to two hours once diagnosed. A furnace replacement is usually a one-day job: we arrive in the morning and you have heat by evening. During a cold snap, no-heat calls for homes with infants, older adults or medical needs go to the front of the line. Just tell us when you call.

What you can do right now

If you smell gas or your CO alarm goes off: don't touch light switches, the thermostat or appliances. Get everyone, pets included, out of the house. From outside, call your gas utility's emergency line or 911. Don't go back in until they say it's safe. Then call us.

No heat, no gas smell? Check these first: Is the thermostat set to "Heat" and a few degrees above room temperature? Are its batteries fresh? Is the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch, on or near the furnace) turned on? Is the furnace breaker in the panel on? Is the filter clogged? Is the front panel seated properly? Many furnaces won't run with the door off. If you have a high-efficiency furnace, check that the white plastic vent pipes outside aren't blocked by snow or leaves.

Still no heat? Call (614) 555-0187, day or night.

Furnace questions

Repair or replace?

Our rule of thumb: if the furnace is over 15 years old and the repair is more than about a third of the cost of a new one, it's worth considering replacement. Under that, repair it. A cracked heat exchanger is the exception; that's a safety issue and usually means replacement.

How often should I change my filter?

A standard 1-inch filter every one to three months during heating season. Thicker media filters last six months to a year. More often if you have pets.

Should I replace my AC at the same time?

If your AC is over 12 years old, it's worth pricing together. Matched systems run more efficiently, and installing both at once saves on labor. But if your AC is healthy, we won't push it.

Do you offer a free second opinion?

Yes, on any system replacement quote from another company.
