Pricing and payment

How much does a service call cost?

Our diagnostic visit is $89. If you go ahead with the repair, we apply the $89 to the bill, so you're not paying twice.

Do you charge by the hour?

No. After the tech diagnoses the problem, you get a written, upfront price for the whole job before any work starts. If the job takes longer than we expected, that's on us. Our most common prices are listed on the pricing page.

What if I decide not to do the repair?

Then you pay the $89 diagnostic and nothing else. No pressure, and we'll leave you with a written note of what we found so you can think it over or get another opinion.

Do you charge extra for nights, weekends and holidays?

There's a $149 dispatch fee for after-hours emergency calls (outside Mon–Fri 7:30–5:30 and Sat 8–1). It's waived for Comfort Club members. The repair price itself is the same as during the day.

What forms of payment do you take?

All major credit and debit cards, checks, cash, and financing on larger jobs. Your tech can take payment on a tablet at the end of the visit, or we can email you an invoice.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Financing is available as low as $79 a month with approved credit, and 0% for 18 months on systems over $5,000. Applying takes about ten minutes. See the financing page for details.

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer 10% off for military, first responders and teachers, and there are usually a couple of coupons running. Check the coupons page, and mention a coupon when you book.

Will you give me a free estimate?

Estimates for system replacements (furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, water heaters) and sewer line work are free. For repairs, the $89 diagnostic covers the tech finding what's wrong. We'll also give you a free second opinion on any replacement quote from another company.

Scheduling and visits

What are your office hours?

Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The emergency line at (614) 555-0187 is answered 24/7.

Can I book online?

Yes. Use the booking page to pick a service and a preferred arrival window. We'll confirm by text or phone within one business hour during office hours.

How big are your arrival windows?

You pick an arrival window when you book, from a two-hour early-morning slot to a wider morning, midday or afternoon window, and your tech will text you when they're on the way, with their name and photo.

Can you come today?

Most days, yes, especially if you call before noon. In heat waves and cold snaps we get busy, and Comfort Club members get priority, but we'll always tell you honestly when we can be there.

Do I need to be home?

For most visits, yes, or another adult needs to be there. For some outdoor work (like an AC condenser) we can make arrangements ahead of time.

Will the tech wear shoe covers?

Always. We also lay drop cloths and clean up the work area before we leave.

Are your technicians background-checked?

Every technician is background-checked and drug-tested before they're hired, and trained in-house before they run calls on their own.

What towns do you serve?

Hilliard, Dublin, Upper Arlington, Grandview Heights, Worthington, Westerville, Grove City, Powell, Plain City, Marysville (limited, so please call first), and the west and north sides of Columbus. See the service area page.

Emergencies

What counts as an emergency?

Water you can't stop, sewage backing up, no heat in cold weather, no cooling for someone vulnerable in extreme heat, a gas smell (call your gas company and 911 first, from outside), or no water at all. If you're not sure, call us and we'll help you decide.

I have water pouring out of a pipe. What do I do right now?

Shut off your main water valve. In most Central Ohio houses it's in the basement on the front wall, where the water line comes in, near the meter. Turn the handle clockwise (or turn a lever handle a quarter turn so it's crosswise to the pipe). Then call us. Our post on how to shut off your water walks you through it.

I smell gas. Should I call you?

Not first. Leave the house right away without flipping switches or using anything that could spark, then call 911 and your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Once they've made it safe, we're glad to repair the appliance or line.

Does a real person answer at night?

Yes. Our after-hours line is answered by K&D staff, not an answering service. They can dispatch a tech directly.

Plumbing

How long do water heaters last?

A tank water heater usually lasts 8 to 12 years around here; our hard-ish water shortens that a bit. Tankless units often last 20 years with regular descaling. If yours is past ten and showing rust or rumbling, start planning.

Can you replace my water heater the same day?

Most days, if you call us by noon. A 40-gallon gas tank installed starts at $1,895 and a 50-gallon electric at $1,795, including haul-away of the old one.

Should I switch to a tankless water heater?

It depends on your household, your gas line and how long you plan to stay. Tankless installs start at $3,900. Our blog post on tank vs. tankless lays out the trade-offs honestly.

Are drain cleaning chemicals OK to use?

We'd rather you didn't. They can damage older pipes and they're hard on the tech who has to work in that drain afterward. A plunger or a hand auger is safer, and if those don't work, call us. Main line drain cleaning starts at $189.

Why would I need a sewer camera inspection?

If drains keep backing up, if you have big trees near the sewer line, or if you're buying an older house, a $249 camera inspection shows exactly what's going on down there before you spend money on a fix.

Do you do trenchless sewer repair?

Yes, when the line is a good candidate. Trenchless lining or pipe bursting can save your lawn, driveway and landscaping. Sewer estimates are free.

My sump pump is ten years old. Should I replace it?

Probably, before it fails during a storm. Sump pump replacement starts at $695, and we recommend a battery backup ($450 add-on) for anyone with a finished basement.

Can I buy my own faucet or toilet and have you install it?

Yes. We'll install fixtures you've bought, though our labor warranty covers the installation, not the fixture itself. Faucet installs start at $219.

Heating and cooling

How often should my furnace and AC be serviced?

Once a year each: the furnace in the fall and the AC in the spring. A tune-up is $129, or both are included in the Comfort Club for $199 a year.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

Every one to three months for a standard 1-inch filter, and every 6 to 12 months for a thicker media filter. More often if you have pets. Gus alone would require weekly changes.

What brands do you work on?

All major furnace, air conditioner, heat pump and boiler brands. We'll recommend equipment based on your house, not on which brand pays the best.

When should I replace my furnace instead of repairing it?

A rough rule: if the furnace is over 15 years old and the repair costs more than a third of a new one, replacement is usually the better deal. Furnace replacement starts at $4,800. We'll lay out both options and let you choose.

Do heat pumps really work in Ohio winters?

Modern cold-climate heat pumps do, down into the single digits and below, and many homeowners pair one with a gas furnace as backup. Heat pump systems start at $8,500. See our post Is a heat pump right for Ohio?

Are there rebates or tax credits for heat pumps?

Often, yes. Ask us about current utility rebates and federal tax credits for heat pumps; they change from year to year, and we'll help you with the paperwork.

What is a ductless mini-split?

A small heat pump that heats and cools a single room or zone without ductwork. Great for additions, bonus rooms, sunrooms and old houses. They start at $4,200 per zone.

My furnace is making a strange noise. Is it dangerous?

Most noises aren't, but some are worth a call right away. Our post on what that furnace noise means covers the common ones. Any booming, or a smell of gas or burning, means turn it off and call.

Warranty and the Comfort Club

What is the K&D Promise?

One year on labor for repairs, and 10 years on parts and 2 years on labor for new systems we install. If something we did isn't right, we come back and fix it at no charge. Details are on the warranty page.

What's included in the Comfort Club?

For $199 a year: a furnace tune-up and an AC tune-up, 15% off repairs, priority scheduling and no after-hours fees. We'll remind you when your tune-ups are due.

Can I cancel the Comfort Club?

Yes, any time. If you cancel before your second tune-up, we'll refund the difference.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We hold an Ohio master plumber license and an Ohio HVAC contractor license, and we're fully insured and bonded. Happy to send proof to you or your HOA.

Is K&D really a family business?

Really. Stan Kowalczyk started the company in 1987, and his daughters Agnes and Dana have run it since 2016. Stan still answers the phone on Saturdays. Read our story.
